The George Jefferson Effect By Raymond Tyler

Remembering Sherman Hemsley
...or Mr. Jefferson To You and I!
Words By Raymond Tyler
Sherman Alexander Hemsley
February 1, 1938 – July 24, 2012

The world lost an under appreciated veteran actor yesterday July 24th, 2012 when Sherman Hemsley passed away.

However the iconic character of George Jefferson, will forever inspire people of all races, colors and genders to MOVE ON UP.

As a kid growing up in the 1970's it was easy for me to write off the character of George Jefferson as merely an antagonist for Archie Bunker. There was a time before I worked for a living I viewed George as a short motor mouth armed with little more than a blistering array of "Whitey's" and "Honkey's"

As I moved into my teen age year however, I began to admire Hemsley's brilliance as an actor and the writers who made George Jefferson one of the most complex black men we have ever seen on TV.

I am sure that even today you would be able to find real people with thriving businesses who could point to the story that Hemsley and The Jefferson's brought to the 1970's and 80's TV.
I know I was inspired by Jefferson's move from the poverty of being a share croppers' son, then opening a small dry cleaning business in Harlem, eventually moving his family to the middle class where we first meet The Jefferson's as neighbors of The Bunkers on the show ALL IN THE FAMILY. Ultimately Jefferson was able to open several stores in most of the five burroughs and gain wealth for himself and his family.

Hemsley's Jefferson is the only Black man on television who we saw make those moves in class. Likewise, he can be credited as a fore-runner of  Bill Cosby's "Dr. Huxtable" and James Avery's "Uncle Phillip Banks."  Although in the case of Phillip Banks we were able to tune in as he moved from a lawyer to a judge.

George Jefferson was most complex  as a character when trying to fit in the world of wealth. His charachter never apologized for his achievements and almost always shined the light on the fact that everyone should have an opportunity to live like human beings.

However as in the clip above he often was brought face to face with the life and the people and friendships he left behind when moving to the "DEE LUXE Apartment in the sky."

I don't know of many other characters besides The Jefferson's that repeatedly have to find a way to live in one world where every one wants what they have and yet another world where very few people can relate to where they came from.

By the time I was 25 I gained a healthy respect for each of the core cast members of The Jeffersons and the roles they created.

I had marveled at Miss Isabel Sanford's range as an actress.
I thoroughly enjoyed her small role in Guess Who's Coming To Dinner.

I so respected her as "Weezy" Jefferson watching her grow into a woman who earned the right to enjoy her wealth. Then really proud that her character became such a vital role in helping other people down at the "health center."

I had always respected Mike Evans as an actor on All In The family but was delighted when I found out that he was a co-creator of the show Good Times with Mr. Eric Monte.

On The Jeffersons his character who was already wealthy went on to finish college and make his dad proud. He made a lot of young cats like me kind of proud too.

There is not enough internet to explain the impact that George Jefferson and Jefferson Cleaners had on me.

I can say this. My first business was making and selling mix tapes in the 1990's and my very first one was titled LIVE FROM JEFFERSON CLEANERS. I recorded the mix tape as if I were a radio personality hosting a live remote from their original Harlem location.

Sherman Hemsley did great work before George Jefferson playing Purly Victorious in the hit stage play Purly. Hemsley went on to create another iconic TV role as Deacon Earnest Frye on Amen, which was set in his home town of Philadelphia.

While the core cast of The Jeffersons have all passed beyond our ability to touch them.
The characters they brought to the small screen will influence my life as long as I have a business to put my name on.

Life Is Good For Nas...

Back Talk....Nas Life Is Good

I have been down with Nas since HALF TIME.
Most of his songs I would say should be played on cassette so that you have to physically REWIND the tape.

I have not however reviewed by copy of LIFE IS GOOD.
I do however have friends on FACEBOOK who recognize real hip hop.

For the most part they are feeling Life Is Good.
If I had gone through the divorce court abusing that Nas just went through, I might have called my CD
LIFE IS HELL WITH THE WRONG WOMAN AND MY DUMB BUTT THOUGHT IT WAS LOVE!

I digress however.

Words by Raymond Tyler

Here's What My Facebook Don's Said About LIFE IS GOOD and NASTY NAS!
BILLY JEAN-I think this cd is epic...one thing i love about Nas is that he is a story teller and he wears his heart on his sleeve...can't get any realer than that. I feel the subject matter on each song and i really can connect...I give is 5 mics

NIKASHA-I think this CD should get a grammy nod. It's been a long time since I could listen to a HIP HOP CD straight through. Not really feeling the swizz beats track but that's due to the swizz beats "sound"

ANTONIO-Its great to hear a CD that is just good hiphop...it gives you the feeling of music from 1993 -2000's but still fresh enough to be new.

ILLOGIK-The album sounds like NAS when you first started hearing him. Timeless music-nd GOOD HIP-HOP!
DJ SINCERE-One of, if not the hottest CD this year! Real Hip-Hop is over here!!!!! Need I say more!!!!

Naila-From what I've heard, I love the growth in subject matter, but the flow is wack! Which really hurts my soul. It's like he's trying to compete with these youngsters....he's NAS and should know that he's above all that...
SHYSTE-I been listening to this cd since Tuesday its that good listen all the way through over and over.My only complaint is the songs seem out of order. The CD gets mellow allowing Nas to set a mood with great production, guest singers and his dope story telling conceptual rhymes that use great imagry, then out of no where comes songs like THE DON or SUMMER ON SMASH to interupt the mood. Maybe his best work since his classicSTILLMATIC. A more mature Nas who made the hip hop classic ILLMATTIC.

SHIREEN-I was pleasantly surprised with Life is Good. I hadn't liked a Nas CD since Stillmatic but his flow, the storytelling reminded me again of why I dug Nas in the first place! And yes

, I wasn't feeling the Swizz track either.
HERB-Nas is the measuring tape of all Emcees!!!

DJ Jazzy Jeff is Stopping By The Music And Entertainment Report! TONIGHT!

 JAZZY JEFF...DJ HERO
Words By Raymond Tyler

DJ Jazzy Jeff will be
ROCKING THE HOUSE at Caesar's Atlantic City on Tuesday July 17th at Dusk!
Before hand he will be on The Music and Entertainment Report with Raymond Tyler on Monday!
I have loved hip hop for more than 3 decades. I have seen the art form trend from party music to some of the most important music to sometimes being a mess.
Having seen and enjoyed hip hop through many fun times till now, I can say with out a doubt that
DJ Jazzy Jeff is one of the most important people to the culture.

It would be easy to back up my last statement with a list of awards, TV appreances, and other honors.

However, what makes Jeff important in my mind is that he creates music that stands up there on the same level as Public Enemy or any other artist.

What makes Jeff legendary is that from the time I heard The Magnificent Jazzy Jeff and A Touch Of Jazz in 1984-85 there has never been a time that I didn't play his music and have it on record, tape, mix tape, CD and MP3.
Most artists are lucky to have one single where everybody remembers where they were when they first heard it...Jeff has been a part of several (and counting.)
He is one of a select group of artists who blew my mind in the 1980's and came back (The Return Of The Magnificent CD) and blew my mind again in the 2000's.

You Might Say "Ray you are jocking Jeff."
Well if we can agree, there's no shame in being the best?
I would say "I have no shame cause Jeff is the number one DJ in my book" And it's a long way to number two ( I think the man I have as number two might even agree.)

He's THEE DJ....Here Is A Short List of Why I Been Rolling With DJ JAZZY JEFF since 1984.

In 1984...I thought The Adventures of Grand Master Flash On The Wheels Of Steel would be the most amazing DJ driven record I would ever hear. Then I heard The Magnificent Jazzy Jeff complete with the sick rhymes by Fresh Prince and sicker production and scratches by Jeff.
(It's just an amazing interactiong of a fresh MC and a DJ with super powers. You have to hear it for yourself.)

I have about five great copies of Jeff's first LP Rock The House on vinyl. Two of them are still factory sealed.

As a DJ myself I LEARN and figure out stuff everytime I hear Jeff spin. The craziest thing about it is that I can pick up things just by listening. I feel bad when I watch him spin I feel like I'm cheating.
It's hard to explain to people who don't spin. I will try.
First my hands cannot do what Jeff's does (unless you are a brain surgeon yours most likely don't either.) However, when I hear Jeff play a set, he helps me make a mental picture of me playing my set and some of the things I can do with my own music. (One day I am just going to take a note book and write stuff down.)

In my opinion Jeff is still the number one DJ in the universe and he has the very first DJ Battle for World Supremacy Title ever given to back that up.

DJ Jazzy Jeff produced three of the best hip hop recordings ever. The LP's ROCK THE HOUSE, HE'S THE DJ I'M THE RAPPER and THE RETURN OF THE MAGNIFICENT are each different and incredible. They should be mandatory listening for everybody.

I ain't finished but I could go on all day.

Tune in to The MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT REPORT on Monday from 6pm to 7:30pm
